Suzanne Mayfair was the first of the Mayfair Family of witches and the first to call forth Lasher. She was a village healer in Donnelaith, Scotland. Beautiful and peaceful, though thought to be dimwitted, she conceived Deborah Mayfair during the May festival. Though it was not known for certain, Deborah was believed to be fathered by the Earl of Donnelaith. A man passing through Donnelaith who went to Suzanne for a cut on his hand, read to her the book, "Demonologie," intending to warn her of the dangers inherent to midwives, healers, and spirits' apparent attraction to them. However, he actually taught her much about witchcraft. Many years later, she took her daughter Deborah to the circle of stones in Donnelaith, where she summoned a spirit, and called him Lasher, "for the wind... that lashes the grasslands, for the wind that lashes the leaves from the trees." Petyr van Abel, a member of the Talamasca, arrived in Donnelaith the day of Suzanne's burning for witchcraft, as wagons were carting away the remains of the pyre and Deborah was being taken away after being flogged while witnessing the burning; she was not burned with her mother because she was a "merry-begot". He took Deborah with him as he left Donnelaith.
