Refers to the act of making a mortal into a new immortal vampire. To work the Dark Trick, the fledgling's blood is drawn out to the point where the heart nearly stops beating and is then replaced with the vampire maker's powerful Blood so that the immortal spirit of Amel could fuse with the heart.
The Dark Trick results in a veil of silence between vampires and their fledglings, destroying the intimacy that the vampires were trying to capture by making a companion as vampires cannot read the mind of their fledglings and vice versa. Lestat discovers this with Gabrielle, who grows increasingly cold to him. With Nicolas and Claudia, their love for him turns to hate. Lestat finds with Louis he cannot fully connect with him. He has more hope that such grief will not occur with David, who shares many of his interests and concerns.
